The unrest that broke out in France last week after a teenager of North African descent was killed by a police officer has now entered its fifth day and has continued to spread across the country. French officials have deployed an alarming 45,000 officers and "gendarmes," the French equivalent of the national guard, which has led to the arrest of more than 700 people nationwide by Sunday night as they work to quash massive civil unrest that is quickly cascading into a dangerous situation.

The Interior Ministry noted that despite 45 police officers and gendarmes being injured in the clashes, "their resolute action, coordinated by the prefects, ensured a calmer night."

Despite the 719 arrests on Sunday evening, authorities claim the riots are dying down as an alarming 1,300 people were arrested Friday night.

Meanwhile, Vincent Jeanbrun, who is the mayor of Paris suburb L’Haÿ-les-Roses described a burning car crashing into his house and injuring his wife and one of their children as an "assassination attempt."

"At 1:30 a.m., while I was at the town hall as I had been for the past 3 nights, individuals rammed a car into my home before setting it on fire to burn down my house, where my wife and two young children were sleeping," the mayor Tweeted Sunday.

"My wife and one of my children were injured when they tried to protect themselves and escape the assailants. It was an unspeakable, cowardly assassination attempt," Jeanbrun added.

In cities across France, rioters gathered in the streets to set buildings and cars ablaze while others looted storefronts amid the chaos.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, police avoided the funeral of the 17-year-old whose death sparked the riots and protests. Hundreds of people lined the streets as his white casket made its way from a local mosque to a hilltop burial site in a Paris suburb.

While the protests appear to have erupted overnight after the teen was shot by police Tuesday during a traffic stop, France has been at a boiling point for years amid an uncontrolled influx of migrants.

French President Emmanuel Macron has blamed social media and video games for the violence and burgeoning crisis, while everyone from former U.S. President Donald Trump to 25 retired French generals has warned for years that such civil unrest was bubbling just under the surface.

Years ago Trump warned, "I wouldn't go to France. Because France is no longer France...This world better be very careful and they better get very tough and very smart."

Furthermore, in a 2021 open letter to Macron, 25 retired generals warned the president that France was headed for "civil war" due to the flood of migrants. Not only did Macron not heed the generals' warning, but he also threatened to punish active-duty soldiers who signed the letter. As if a letter signed by more than 20 top military officials wasn't enough of a warning, French streets and cities have turned into war zones and 45,000 police and gendarmes have been deployed to deal with the madness. It's time for Macron to wake up.

According to Polish Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Arkadiusz Mularczyk, Germany's ruling Social Democrats (SPD) party is ready to "solve" the lingering issue of war reparations with Poland. Mularczyk said on Tuesday during a meeting in Warsaw that the SPD government led by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz "understand the problem and wants to solve it in some way in a formula of dialogue with Poland."

While Poland has repeatedly raised the topic of World War II reparations with Germany, Berlin has continuously dismissed Warsaw's requests. The latest of which was for an estimated €1.5 trillion that Poland claimed Germany owed for material and humanitarian losses during WWII.

After a series of meetings and letters regarding Poland's requests for reparations from Germany, Mularczyk received a letter from the German SPD government saying it is ready to resolve the issue. Mularczyk said:

"There was a series of meetings with German MPs, in Warsaw, with MPs of the Polish-German friendship group, but also in Berlin, with a number of German parliamentarians. The largest was a meeting at the German Council on Foreign Relations, DGAP, where there was a group of at lest a dozen parliamentarians. Recently, I sent a letter to all members of the Bundestag and Bundesrat on this issue, and you will be the first to know that I've just received a thank you from the Coordinator of German-Polish Intersocietal and Cross-Border Cooperation at the Federal Foreign Office in the coalition government of Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Dietmar Nietan, writing on behalf of the SPD, that they understand the problem and want to solve it in some way in a formula of dialogue with Poland and also with me."

While in the past Germany has claimed that the issue of reparations to Poland is "settled," Warsaw has pressed the issue through both diplomatic and political means to force Berlin to acknowledge Poland's detrimental losses during World War II.

After Germany refused to pay reparations to Poland in 2022, Mularczyk said, "Now, Germany has a choice: Either it sits down with Poland at the negotiating table, or we will raise the issue in all international forums - in the UN, in the Council of Europe and in the European Union."

In December 2022, Mularczyk approached the secretary general of the Council of Europe for assistance with Warsaw's reparations claim against Berlin. At that time, he said that Germany had refused to discuss the matter.

Germany has long referred to the 1953 agreement between Poland and Germany in which Poland's then-communist leaders abandoned all demands for reparations due to being pressured by the Soviet Union, which was seeking to relieve East Germany of any liability.

Poland, however, has argued that the agreement is invalid as it was agreed to under duress and because the country has not received adequate compensation for its losses during WWII. Mularczyk has also cited a lack of formal documentation of Poland's relinquishing of reparation demands as a reason to continue to push for compensation.

While it is unclear how far German officials are willing to take the reparations discussion, acknowledgment of the need for such talks appears to be a positive first step from Poland's perspective.

The Teamsters Union which represents hundreds of thousands of United Parcel Service (UPS) drivers, has "walked away from the national bargaining table" and has given the shipping company until Friday to provide its "last, best, and final offer."

In a statement, Teamsters General President Sean O'Brien said, "The largest single-employer strike in American history now appears inevitable."

"Executives at UPS, some of whom get tens of millions of dollars a year, do not care about the hundreds of thousands of American workers who make this company run," O'Brien added.

The UPS Teamsters Union has 340,000 members and has been in negotiations with UPS since mid-April. The workers' five-year contract is set to expire on July 31 and earlier this month the union called for workers to strike if UPS refuses to offer a fair agreement prior to the contract's expiration.

UPS is the second largest ground carrier behind the U.S. Postal Service and is responsible for delivering some 20 million packages daily across the U.S. A strike could be detrimental to the U.S. supply chain and an economy that is still recovering from the effects of Covid lockdowns and is struggling with inflation.

"With a deadline of Friday to return a last, best, and final offer, UPS risks putting itself on strike by August 1 and causing devastating disruptions to the supply chain in the U.S. and other parts of the world," the Teamsters said.

The union added that "We have an economy today that is reliant on parcel delivery and no one in the game handles more packages per day or provides better service than Teamsters at UPS."

On Tuesday, an Arizona county elections director resigned from her position in Pinal County and accused officials of creating a harmful work environment and politicizing elections.

Geraldine Roll initially took on the position of elections director after the 2022 midterm elections to oversee the recount process. Her resignation was announced by the Pinal County government this week.

On Tuesday, Roll sent a scathing email to county officials announcing her resignation and expressing her dissatisfaction with County Manager Leo Lew and the work environment she experienced.

Roll cited a loss of respect for her superiors after they did not support her at times when she was attacked and criticized. "With no regrets, I quit," Roll wrote.

"When you no longer respect those you work for, it is time to leave. I have watched as you idly stood by when I was attacked," Roll continued. "I cannot work for an individual who does not support me. The environment fostered by your team and the Board of Supervisors is toxic."

Roll went on to also state that the Elections Department "should not be politicized." She specifically accused Lew and the Board of Supervisors of prioritizing "irrational, extremist political party views and rhetoric" over "impartiality, common sense, and dedicated work."

"It is a far reach to see how you will deliver clean elections when you bend to a faction of the Republican party," Roll added in her email. "Clearly, politics are the value this administration desires in a place where politics have no place: elections administration," she explained.

According to Roll, at no time during her career had she faced the level of disrespect, ridicule, intimidation, and "attacks on my reputation and ethics" as she has endured over the past several months. Roll has not been in the position even a full year.

The timing of Roll's resignation is poignant as it comes amid ongoing scrutiny and partisan strain regarding election administration in numerous counties across the state.

In a last expression of contempt, Rolls signed her email "Really, not respectfully." In comments she later gave to the Pinal Central, Rolls stated that she had done nothing wrong and explained that she quit, she did not resign. "I think there's a very big difference," she clarified.

After receiving Roll's email, Lew released a statement thanking the disgruntled election official for her service.

"I want to thank Geri for her service during very challenging times and for the improvements that she identified and began to implement in the Elections Department," Lew's statement said.

"Although I disagree with her assessment, she has been an impactful public servant, and I wish her the best and know that she will continue to do great things in her career."

Roll had been employed by Pinal County since 2013, previously serving as deputy county attorney during which time she provided legal counsel to various departments including the Recorder's Office and Elections Department. She had not overseen any elections since her appointment as elections director at the end of last year.

Wednesday saw a second night of violent protests across France as security forces struggled to prevent further demonstrations in response to the fatal shooting of a teenager by police.

Following the incident Tuesday morning during which a 17-year-old was shot at point-blank range in the chest during a traffic stop, some 2,000 riot police were deployed in Paris suburbs as violent protests broke out across the city.

France's interior minister announced that an additional 40,000 police officers were deployed Thursday night in an attempt to quash further outbreaks of violence after the teen's mother called for a march on Thursday as a tribute to her only child.

According to Breitbart London, 31 people were arrested and 24 police officers were injured in clashes that engulfed Paris suburbs from Tuesday night into Friday morning.

Overnight Wednesday, fireworks aimed at police were shot off and cars were set on fire in the western suburb of Nanterre, where the shooting occurred. Meanwhile, protests and further arson attacks broke out in the eastern city of Dijon and in communes of the Hauts-de-Seine region west of the capital.

In Essonne to the south of Paris, a group of rioters forced all the passengers off a bus before setting it on fire.

In Toulouse, several cars were set ablaze while responding firefighters and police were hit with projectiles.

While visiting Marseille, French President Emmanuel Macron issued a rare criticism of the security forces saying, "A teenager was killed. That is inexplicable and unforgivable."

After midnight Friday morning, police reported that some 150 people had been arrested across the country stemming from the protests and riots related to the shooting.

A recent poll conducted for the French newspaper Le Figaro reflects the discontent many French citizens feel towards an ongoing flood of illegal immigrants that have entered the country over the past several months as illegal immigration has been on the rise in many Western countries. According to the poll, as many as 3 out of 4 French people believe that France has allowed too many immigrants into the country under President Emmanuel Macron.

According to the Odoxa-Backbone Consulting poll, the French are overwhelmed by the influx of immigrants and want improvements to the country's immigration controls along with more deportations and some even want a referendum on immigration into France.

Some 74 percent of those polled say there are too many immigrants in the country, which is an 11-point increase from when the poll was originally conducted 5 years prior.

The poll shows an increased dissatisfaction with the number of immigrants in France across almost all parties with supporters of the National Rally (97 percent), Republicans (91 percent), Renaissance (68 percent), Socialists (52 percent), and Greens (51 percent). The only party in the minority were supporters of the La France Insoumise which came in at 44 percent, according to ZeroHedge.

A solid 79 percent of the French population also wants asylum seekers to have their requests approved prior to their entrance to the country. Meanwhile, 74 percent also believe that the French parliament should set immigration quotas for each year and some 72 percent think that immigration policy should be determined by a referendum.

Not only did a majority of National Rally, Reconquête, and Les Republicans voters take a hardline stance on immigration but so did supporters of Macron's party Renaissance. All participants in the poll were highly critical of Macron's handling of immigration issues other than the president's supporters.

When voters were asked about the issue of refugees coming to France to flee persecution 55 percent said that they should be accepted, but that is a 10-point decrease from 5 years ago.

The French perspective on immigration doesn't seem to be exclusively about keeping immigrants out of the country with many approving proposals to better integrate immigrants. Some 58 percent supported a residence permit for undocumented workers with jobs that employers have struggled to fill and the same percentage supported asylum seekers being allowed access to jobs.

Céline Bracq, Odoxa's managing director said, "On immigration, French people's thinking is finally 'complex', a sort of 'at the same time' reduce the number of arrivals but also show ourselves more inclusive for immigrants already on our territory."

French citizens aren't the only ones concerned about the growing number of immigrants in France with David Lisnard, the mayor of Cannes telling Europe 1 television station that immigration has become a serious problem for the country after it took in a record 500,000 immigrants in 2022.

Lisnard stressed that the French government must do something to gain control of the immigration situation or it will have detrimental effects on the country.

"It is communication itself that creates the problem. Immigration has become a major problem in France, we received more or less 600,000 people last year - 600,000. This is a (new) record. Hence, we must close the taps on immigration today, in the interest of the balance of French society," he said.
