Healthcare executive Donato J. Tramuto has a reputation as a global health activist and philanthropist. He has authored three books, including one entitled The Double Bottom Line: How Compassionate Leaders Captivate Hearts and Deliver Results. He even has a heart-warming story of needing seven surgeries after losing his hearing at the age of seven.

His Tramuto Foundation [TramutoPorter Foundation since 2021] donated over a million dollars to the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights organization headed by RFK’s daughter Kerry Kennedy. Kennedy bestowed Tramuto with a Ripple of Hope award for his charitable work in the global health field.

An even bigger star in Tramuto’s crown is serving as chairman of the board of the RFK Center for Justice & Human Rights Europe. His charitable work has also landed him seats on the executive leadership boards of the Boston University School of Public Health, the Brown University Healthcare Leadership Board, and the York Community Hospital Board of Trustees. He also chairs the Physicians Interactive Board  of Directors - even though he is not a physician.

In 2020 Tramuto was named an Honorary Scholar in Residence at St. Joseph’s College in Maine and as an Executive in Residence at Promerica Health, Tidesmart Health, Concierge Health, Skyscape, and Sharecare. And just last year, the National Calendar Association awarded his foundation the honor of establishing National Compassionate Leadership Week. 

He now reportedly wants to become Maine’s next governor.

But Donato Tramuto has a dirty little secret - His charitable reputation is built on stolen valor.

On September 10, 2001, Tramuto and his partner Jeffrey Porter had been entertaining their friends Daniel Brandhorst, Ronald Gamboa, and their 3-year-old son David. The next morning, the trio boarded United Flight 175 to return to their California home. Sadly, that plane was hijacked and flew into the South Tower at the World Trade Center, killing everyone on board.

Upon hearing of the tragedy, Tramuto began claiming that he would have been on the flight with his friends but for a last-minute toothache. Based on his tangential claim of “9/11 valor,” he created a charitable foundation, he says, to honor his friends. 

Really? Then why did he not choose the name Brandhorst-Gamboa Foundation?

Tramuto still claims he was “almost a 9/11 victim” in spite of widely known facts that belie his claim. To start with, official FBI records do not include the name Donato Tramuto as a person who had booked, canceled, or fulfilled a seat for either of the two planes that hit the World Trade Center. Make no mistake - Tramuto may have had a toothache, but he was never going to board that plane.

He further claims that, despite the toothache, he would have boarded the plane had there been an available seat in First Class, but, alas, none were available, so he stayed at home in pain after canceling his ticket. The FBI records reveal this as untrue, and moreover a seating plan for United Flight 175 that day shows that First Class seats were indeed available.

Yet Tramuto continues to sell this whopper to everyone he meets. He has to – his “reputation” depends on people believing the lie.

You might think that a foundation created to honor 9/11 victims would focus on assisting surviving family members or raising awareness about violent extremists willing to kill the innocent. But instead, Tramuto sent buckets of money to the now-defunct Christ the King Seminary in Buffalo, New York, whose rector Father Joe Gatto was later accused of facilitating “a culture of sexual license” largely with Central American priesthood candidates. Perhaps some of them were recipients of Tramuto Foundation scholarships – which reportedly went to underprivileged students.

Tramuto hit it big, though, with his generosity with 9/11-inspired donations to RFK Human Rights, enough money to pay Kerry Kennedy’s huge salary for a couple of years. The glamour of having Tony Bennett, Robert De Niro, Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Kerry and Ethel Kennedy at his award ceremony can provide quite a foundation for a political career.

But despite his repeated denials, the truth is that Tramuto has lied for 22 years about missing the deadly flight – and one cannot get fresh water from a poisoned well.

Tramuto’s ongoing dishonesty, which has played a major role in his success, suggests a deep-seated lack of respect for both the victims and the real heroes of 9/11, notably members of the Fire Department of New York who lost their health and even their lives responding to the carnage.

Donato Tramuto, in fact, owes a major apology to the families of 9/11 victims and to the people of America whom he has lied to in order to enhance his own reputation, power, and influence.

Worse, the institutions that have showered Tramuto with honorary doctorates, provided him with prestigious seats on their boards, and used his name to further enhance their own reputations and coffers owe the same apologies.

To Boston University, we ask, how do you reconcile your vision of “making the world healthier and more just” with the injustice of stolen valor attached to your institution? To Kerry Kennedy and her foundation, how does a man who has profited from the tragedy that befell others bring about “a more just and peaceful world”?

To other nonprofits across America and the world, would you stake your reputation on a man whose image as a philanthropist fighting the good fight depends on the lasting scars of 9/11? What would you do confronted with such strong evidence of intellectual fraud?

Perhaps Mr. Tramuto, once he admits his lie and apologizes to all whom he defrauded, can still be of great value to these institutions, even to the state of Maine.

But not now.

Not with the souls of nearly 3,000 dead (more died of injuries and diseases stemming from their post-crash rescue efforts) crying out, why have you used OUR names to enrich yourself?

Vast numbers of people around the world, including millions of young people, are adrift in a sea of moral and ethical confusion. Many no longer find any value in religious or spiritual practices and have been unduly influenced by atheistic and humanistic ideologies that are harmful to individuals and to society.

I’ve written a new novel: The Death and Life of Edward Wild: The Postmortem Adventures of a Modern Man, to present the reality that all human beings share a set of universal ethics that—when practiced—lead to spiritual and emotional health in one’s physical life on Earth as well as in what some people call the “afterlife” or “spirit world.”

Edward Wild is a novel of death and life and what may be true. It’s a story of escape, of hope and redemption, and enduring romance. After the Shakespearean actor Edward Wild is killed in 2022 in Greenwich Village and ends up in a lower realm of the afterlife, he meets Molly Kendall. Neither of them could have guessed how their lives would change. . .

The novel squarely addresses the question of life after death in a non-sectarian fashion. There are so many divergent beliefs about the potential reality of the spirit world that I decided to not offer any doctrinal or theological justifications for the environment set forth in the novel. Instead, I presented what feels true to me, based on a number of spiritual and logical premises that have become central to my life.

For example, if God is an indwelling, omnipresent, and eternal God of love who created human beings to experience love and beauty, then, to me, it makes sense that God would create life and identity to continue forever, with an unwavering goal to strengthen and deepen relationships of sacred love.

In Chapter 36: “Respice Finem” (Latin for “Consider the End”), a character in the story states:

“The fundamental requirements [for spiritual maturity] are kindness and love and humility toward the truth of things. The desire to be loving and kind and the knowledge that we all must grow set us on a path toward a rich and illuminated life.”

She gestured toward the water in front of them and said, “Look at the vastness of the ocean. True humility comes from the realization that the universe has an intelligent and creative source beyond the scope of humans, that the universe and creation and humanity are not the playthings of men and women of hubris. Hubris can harm people on the Earth because good and evil can coexist there, but in the spirit world the condition of a person’s heart restricts them to an environment that is their match.”

Today, in a world gone mad, people need an anchor that can be easily explained—an anchor of virtue that is inspiring and ennobling. The Death and Life of Edward Wild attempts to offer that spiritual anchor and, at the same time, move and inspire the reader with adventure, imagination, and an enduring romance.

With great regret I inform you that Orange is dead. Anti-Semitism is the New Black.

To all my Jewish friends, fellow citizens, and most importantly, the tens of millions of non-Jewish citizens who have become vocal against the spike in anti-Semitism over the last few weeks; please join our mission to fix it.

Stop spending time pining on social media over Kanye West, Kyrie Irving, and Dave Chappelle cancellation. All they did was illuminate a growing problem of how deeply “baked in”the anti-Semitic dialogue truly is.

The swiftest and surest solution, instead, must come from within the Jewish community itself.

Anti-Zionism is becoming university policy, part of entertainment content, social media commentary, international relations. The ground-zero rests with the 2018 Congress of the United States.

The midterm election of 2018 opened the congressional doors to the likes of anti-Israel progressives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (“AOC”), Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, and Ayanna Pressley, known to all of us, a term they use as sword and shield, “The SQUAD”.

As the new heartthrobs of multi-millions of otherwise impressionable teenagers and young adults, the Congressional Progressive Caucus (“CPC”) was intoxicated with the tailwinds the SQUAD brought with them.

In 2018, the CPC embraced the SQUAD political donation and headline machine. 12 of those CPC members were Jewish.

In 2019, the CPC witnessed AOC, Omar, Tlaib, Pressley, and Cori Bush lead the anti-Israel Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) effort in Congress — including the 12 Jewish members of the CPC.

In 2020, the CPC announced the election of their Executive Board (“CPCEB”) and trumpeted the ethnic and gender diversity of those who filled their 27 leadership positions. Including the same 12 Jewish members of the CPC, the Squad’s BDS support be damned.Within the CDCEB was Ilhan Omar, who by virtue of her election to Whip was now 3^rd in command. Rashida Tlaib was elected Vice Chair of Member Services.

In 2021, the CPC watched AOC, Omar, Tlaib, Pressley, and Bush vote against Iron Dome funding. These 12 Jewish CPC members essentially sat silent, anti-Iron Dome and pro-BDS positions be damned.

In 2019, House Republicans stripped Steve King of all leadership and committee posts over his racist utterances. Democrats were swift to condemn the Republican as well, but they had nothing to criticize the GOP for. The King takedown was simply that fast.

Democrats have not been so resolute to clean up the mess in their own backyard. Anti-Semitic tropes, along with regular slanders against Israel and the Jews who live there, are commonplace from AOC, Omar, and Tlaib; yet over 25 sitting Jewish politicians remain inactive, afraid to get cancelled on social media.

TruthTells, a non-partisan 501(c)4, was founded this summer with one agenda: urge sitting Jewish politicians to stop the rise of their anti-Semitic colleagues.

We’re grading each Jewish member of Congress — A+ to F — on their actual performance to fight back against their colleagues. After all,

Dear Jewish CPC members Suzanne Bonamci, David Cicilline, Steve Cohen, Lois Frankel Sara Jacobs, Mike Levin, Alan Lowenthal, Jerry Nadler, Jamie Raskin, Jan Schakowsky, Brad Sherman, John Yarmuth for now, you have a preemptive “F” in fighting anti-Semitism within your ranks, the source of the recent phenomenon.

The clock is ticking. In just a couple of weeks, the CPCED elects new leaders. What will you do? Sit silently idle, or rally your non-Jewish members to take a stand?

As said before, SQUAD narrative has been going to tens of millions of impressionable teenagers and young adults since 2019, so, dear reader, take no more surprise when Kanye West and Kyrie Irving antics are heralded by so many.And lastly, dear friends throughout the CPC, what candle do you still hold for Tlaib anyway? She’s the one who cited that any of you who don’t agree with her, that Israel is an apartheid government, in essence, should stop calling yourselves, “Progressives”.

If our sitting Jewish politicians won’t stop the spread of anti-Semitic politicians, then who will?

Texas Attorney General, Ken Paxton, has requested that those involved in an "all ages" drag show that occurred Saturday in Plano, Texas be prosecuted for what he described as "grotesque, disturbing behavior."

The drag show is one of several "child-friendly" drag shows that have been cropping up around the country in recent months.

The Texas show, which was advertised as being appropriate for "all ages" and allowed minors accompanied by a parent or guardian, included several drag queens and a dominatrix. A disturbing video of the show was posted on Twitter by BlazeTV journalist, Sarah Gonzales, who wrote, "This is something that was overtly sexual. And now apparently the left is gaslighting me into thinking that I'm somehow the crazy one for having a problem with this." Gonzales went on to say, "It gets worse. More footage to come. We WILL stop this" in another social media post.

A young girl can be seen in the background with a confused look on her face and at one point in the full footage of the show that Gonzales shot, the girl can be seen clutching a dollar bill and having her outstretched arm directed toward a drag queen by an adult.

After seeing the video, AG Paxton said, "This is grotesque, disturbing behavior. Under Texas law, local district and county attorneys are charged with taking up the mantle to protect Texas kids by prosecuting these types of totally inappropriate acts." Paxton then went on to discuss the need for better protection of minors in Texas saying, "What's more, in 2023, the Texas Legislature should amend the Texas Penal code to expressly prohibit this kind of grossly sexual conduct and empower my Office to prosecute when district and county attorneys refuse."

It is still unclear whether those involved with the drag show will be prosecuted, but the footage of the incident has solidified the outrage about allowing young children to attend such events for many parents and adults.

(CD MEDIA) First to Rachel, tell us about your background and what brought you to Rimon? Then to Paul?

Rachel Braun: I’ve worked in emerging markets private equity in Africa and in the aerospace and defense industry, primarily in London, Hong Kong, and Johannesburg.

When I started at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania for my MBA, I also had a stint at the venture capital arm of the CIA, In-Q-Tel.

My common thread throughout has been my fascination with new frontiers and innovation. When I heard about Rimon, and the opportunity to run its operational arm, I was fascinated—no one thinks of the law when they think of innovation, but here was this brilliant evolution of the centuries-old law firm trying to materially improve the way attorneys practice law.

I didn’t realize initially that most law firms are still designed the way they have been for over 600 years, in a hierarchical guild structure.

Meanwhile at Rimon Law, the founders used 21^st century tools to create a new business model designed to put the attorneys’ needs first, so they in turn could put their clients’ needs first. 

Paul Loving: I’ve been practicing law for nearly 30 years.  I started as a law clerk for the Oregon Supreme Court (I was the Court’s first Black law clerk), and have worked for various regional and international law firms including Davis Wright Tremaine and Holland & Knight.  I’ve also held various in-house roles with emerging companies and at global brands such as Adidas and Nike.  

I joined Rimon because I was very attracted to Rimon’s entrepreneurial approach to practicing law and its elimination of the counter-productive incentives and inefficiencies that are the unfortunate hallmarks of traditional law firms. 

I was also excited to join a prestigious team of entertainment and sports lawyers already at the firm.

(CD MEDIA)  Paul, can you tell us about your practice, the types of clients you engage with, with particular regard to entertainment, media and sport and if you could, offer a state of the legal industry as it pertains to entertainment law....

Paul Loving: I serve as a trusted advisor to my clients on all aspects of their business and resolve legal issues they face by handling their deals and disputes, or by connecting them to a subject matter expert at Rimon for legal needs that are outside my wheelhouse.  

My industry focus is primarily sports, entertainment and consumer products, and this involves everything from licensing, endorsement and sponsorship agreements to day-to-day commercial agreements and advice regarding marketing and promotions.   

I represent a wide variety of brands ranging from adidas to Logitech, select entertainment talent, and C-suite executives in sports, entertainment and media.

I think you have a mixed bag when you look at the entertainment law industry today - You have small groups at most large law firms (some of whom have handled just a few matters and hold themselves out as entertainment lawyers), other practitioners who are at boutique firms that specialize in entertainment law (particularly in LA and New York), and then, because entertainment law is viewed as a “sexy” practice, you unfortunately see a fair amount of 'pretenders' who want to be around the talent more than they want to do high-quality legal work. 

(CD MEDIA) Rachel, is the rather dynamic world of entertainment law indicative of Rimon Law's commitment to client service and innovation - What were the challenges in virtualizing the Rimon Law practice, so to speak?

Rachel Braun: Celebrities, rock stars, and unicorn startup founders don’t particularly care nowadays whether their attorneys are working from an expensive office building or from their home offices—they just want the best, results-driven attorneys they can find.

And entrepreneurial attorneys who are at the top of their field, particularly after the pandemic, have been asking why they need to be a slave to the minimum billable hour requirement, old-school hierarchical internal politics, and the operational and technological inefficiencies of traditional law firms. Rimon went cloud-based years before others, we built a tech stack that allows for our attorneys to work anywhere in the world, and we built a proprietary internal marketplace that creates an elegant and transparent way of encouraging collaboration amongst our attorneys so that we are a true “one-stop-shop” for our clients.

The hardest part about virtualizing was convincing attorneys that it is possible to have work-life balance and a high-powered career—if you work in a structure like ours, one that cuts out the inefficiencies.

At Rimon you end up working fewer hours, billing clients at more reasonable rates, and yet still making more at the end of the day.  

(CD MEDIA)  Paul, can you speak to trends you're seeing in [entertainment] trademark law, IP and copyright, and the "Right of Publicity"?

Paul Loving: One of the biggest trends in entertainment law right now is legal issues around NFTs and the Metaverse.  The issues related to intellectual property rights and owning and licensing these digital assets are developing and changing rapidly, so lawyers have to be creative and anticipate where the legal landscape will go next.  

Another trend is the convergence of entertainment and sports law as it relates to collegiate athletes and name, image and likeness (NIL) deals.  Student-athletes were once limited to non-revenue recognition for participating in college sports.  Now those individuals have the ability to monetize their NIL and they are a new wave of influencers competing against “traditional” influencers and entertainers in every product and service category. 

(CD MEDIA)  Where do you each see the Rimon firm expanding in the years to come?

Rachel Braun: Rimon’s a global law firm with over 46 locations in 14 countries, with dozens more of our attorneys choosing to work entirely remotely. Our expertise covers practice areas ranging from venture capital to intellectual property inweb3 to international trade to media and entertainment. Not to mention our securities and capital markets practice, M&A, and financial services work, amongst others. We are continuing to expand across a wide range of practice areas because clients are now universally pushing back against wildly bloated legal fees and are seeking the kind of entrepreneurial attorneys at Rimon who become true thought partners in solving their commercial and legal issues.

Paul Loving: The legal industry is notoriously resistant to change.  But what we all witnessed during the pandemic was the imposed adoption across the entire legal industry of practices and technologies that Rimon has successfully been using for over a decade prior to the lockdown.  However, despite record-breaking profitability at large firms, just like the scorpion, big law showed its true nature and returned to its pre-pandemic practices.  

Because of this, many lawyers who had success working from home have realized that they can be successful at Rimon, with far more financial upside and true autonomy over their practice.  

Because of this, Rimon will continue to steadily grow by attracting the best lawyers around the world.

(CD MEDIA)  Is there responsibility in brokering a culture of freedom in the legal industry?

Rachel Braun: Attorneys should have the freedom to choose how they work, where they work, and with whom they work. For a long time the hierarchical structure of traditional firms has meant build-in glass ceilings for women and people of color, it’s meant not having control over your daily life or lifestyle, and it’s meant being at the financial mercy of inefficiently run organizations. 

We believe law firms should put their attorneys first, so that the attorneys can put their clients first. We refuse to believe in the false dichotomy that you have to give up a work-life balance to have a high-powered career, and the increased profitability and life satisfaction partners see when they join us proves that.

Paul Loving: Mentorship and oversight are crucial for any young lawyer.  At the same time, giving lawyers the runway to develop and handle their own practices with more freedom and flexibility can be great for both the lawyers and the clients. 

At the end of the day, it is about striking a balance between oversight and autonomy.
